On October 23, the Fine-Pine Forum sponsored by the Publicity Department of Jiangsu University Party Committee and organized by the School of Foreign Languages was held in Z115 of the Main Building. School of Foreign Languages Dr. Zhang Beizhen gave a lecture entitled “On the learning methods of foreign language vocabulary”. The lecture was presided over by Zhu Wen, a member of the SFL Party Committee. More than 70 postgraduates and undergraduates from the English Department and the English Education Department of the School of Foreign Languages attended the lecture.
Vocabulary is not only the cornerstone of language use, but also an important part of language learning itself. However, there are many complaints from Chinese students learning English vocabulary, like “time-consuming and inefficient”, “a lot of words at stock but often nowhere to find them in use”. Aiming at these problems and based on previous conclusions on lexical knowledge and mental representation, Dr. Zhang’s lecture expounds the relationship between vocabulary learning, lexical representation and lexical usage. Then the lecture analyzes the common phenomena in vocabulary learning, putting forward some suggestions for college students’ vocabulary learning. The students were much attracted by the lecture, listened attentively to the lecture and actively participated in the interactive discussion following the lecture. During the Q-A session, Dr. Zhang Beizhen answered the questions raised by interested students.
This lecture offers help for students to fully understand lexical knowledge and the psychological nature of vocabulary learning, which is conducive to the formation of good vocabulary learning strategies.
