On June 17, the School of Foreign Languages invited renowned international scholar in applied linguistics and Editor-in-Chief of the SSCI journal Language Teaching Research, Professor Hossein Nassaji, to deliver a special academic lecture titled "How to Publish in International Academic Journals." The lecture was chaired by Vice Dean Li Xia and attracted enthusiastic participation from over 100 faculty members and students.
During the lecture, Professor Nassaji, drawing on his extensive experience as an academic editor and profound scholarly expertise, systematically explained the key elements of publishing in international academic journals. He first emphasized the importance of "problem awareness" in academic writing, pointing out that researchers need to accurately identify research gaps through critical literature review and highlight the original value of their studies based on this. Regarding specific aspects of paper writing, Professor Nassaji provided highly practical advice. For example, he suggested that titles should be kept to 10–15 words to accurately convey the core innovation; abstracts should include five key elements: theoretical background, research purpose, methodological design, main findings, and academic value; the introduction should adopt an "inverted pyramid" structure and be limited to one page; the literature review should be systematically organized by theme rather than merely listing sources; and the discussion section should closely revolve around the research questions, establishing organic connections among the results, theory, and practical applications.
In terms of journal submission strategies, Professor Nassaji shared valuable practical insights. He advised researchers to consider journal evaluation metrics from databases such as Scopus and JCR, as well as recommendations from peer experts when selecting a journal. Regarding the submission process, he detailed how to analyze a journal’s acceptance rate and review cycle, emphasized the importance of strictly adhering to the Author Guidelines for formatting, and provided professional advice on how to handle rejections under different circumstances. Professor Nassaji also demonstrated how to write an appropriate response letter during the session, reminding researchers to maintain a professional attitude and avoid emotional expressions.
During the interactive Q&A session, faculty and students engaged in in-depth discussions with Professor Nassaji on key issues in international academic publishing. Professor Nassaji addressed the difficulties faced by participants in writing and submitting papers with clarity and depth. Attendees widely agreed that his lecture was rich in content, insightful, and highly valuable both theoretically and practically, offering a clear roadmap for high-quality international academic publishing.
In her concluding remarks, Vice Dean Li Xia highly praised the academic value and practical significance of the lecture. She emphasized that Professor Nassaji’s sharing not only systematically imparted technical essentials for international journal publishing but, more importantly, inspired the research thinking of faculty and students through vivid examples, providing methodological guidance for their scholarly work.
The School will take this event as an opportunity to further advance the "Research Literacy Enhancement Plan." By establishing regular "Face-to-Face with Journal Editors" exchanges, organizing international publishing mentor workshops, and implementing other initiatives, the School will provide systematic support for enhancing the research capabilities of its faculty and students.
