On the afternoon of November 15, Zhenjiang Society for Pearl S. Buck Studies held the “Love for Good Earth” Poetry Reading Competition ceremonially in the F1 Auditorium of Jiangsu University Library. The competition attracted 18 competitors and nearly 200 cheerleaders from Jiangsu University, Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, Zhenjiang College, Zhenjiang Higher Vocational College, and Pearl S. Buck’s Alma Mater Zhenjiang Chongshi Girls’ High School, as well as Jiangsu University Vice President Chen Hong,Zhenjiang Society for Pearl S. Buck Studies Honorable President Lu Zhangping, President Cai Wenjun and Vice President Ji Dong, Zhenjiang College Vice President Wan Bibo, Zhenjiang Pearl S. Buck Memorial Hall Curator Tang Qiguang, Jiangsu University the School of Foreign Languages Dean Li Chongyue, Jiangsu University Social Science Office Deputy Director Zhao Ming, Zhenjiang Society for Pearl S. Buck Studies Vice President & Zhenjiang Institute of Pearl S. Buck Studies Director Wu Qinghong and Deputy Director Shi Huige. They gathered together to cherish the memory of the profound affection of Pearl S. Buck, “the Daughter of Zhenjiang”, for the Chinese land and the long-standing Chinese culture. The competition was emceed by Tian Aiqi of Jiangsu University.
JSU competitors created good results at the competition. Mei Xiaopei and Liu Qinyan won a first prize respectively, Li Suzhen and Wang Huihui won a third prize respectively, Vietnamese student Anne won a consolation prize. Wang Huihui, Li Suzhen and Zeng Qin won a first, second and third prize for recital words respectively. Wu Qinghong, Shi Huige and Wan Xuemei each won a prize for tutorship.
Pearl S. Buck (1892-1973) is an American writer who won the Nobel Prize for Literature for the Chinese themes of her literary creation. Pearl S. Buck regarded Zhenjiang as her “Chinese homeland”, impressed the westerners with her depiction of tough Chinese farmers and the enduring and glamorous Chinese culture, and thus was esteemed by the westerners as “the bridge between the eastern and the western culture”. Through the competition we know better about Pearl S. Buck’s “Love for Good Earth” and become more confident about the Chinese culture. (School of Foreign Languages)
