MTI program of Jiangsu University began to enroll students in 2023, and now has completed course teaching stipulated by China National Committee for Graduate Education of Translation and Interpreting (GETI), with all students in Class of 2023 taking up their internship posts/ working as intern/ being accepted into internship programs. From October to November, the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) organized a series of expert lectures, inviting famous teachers from inside and outside the province to interpret the latest document released by GETI to help MTI teachers and students cope with the upcoming translation reports writing of MTI theses.
Associate Prof. Zhang Guangfa, supervisor of MTI students of School of Foreign Studies Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Prof. Zhao Junfeng, Doctor of Forensic Linguistics and Level-2 Professor of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, and Associate Prof. Zhao Tianyuan, supervisor of MTI students of Graduate School of Translation & Interpretation, Beijing Foreign Studies University, gave lectures on special topic respectively with the title Topic Selection, Thesis proposal and Writing of the Graduates’ Theses: Take Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications for Example, Theses Writing: Principles and Application, and Experience sharing: MTI Graduation Theses Writing and Application.
Associate Prof. Zhang boosts rich academic background and practical experience in the field of translation studies. He discussed in depth the topic selection, thesis proposal and the main points of writing graduates’ theses, and shared feasible guidance and suggestions with the case of Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications. Emphasizing the importance of selecting a good topic, he pointed out that a good topic is the basis for the success of the whole research, and shared the necessity of clarifying research objectives and research methods. Prof. Zhang’s explanation was easy to understand, vivid and interesting, providing a clearer knowledge of every link of theses writing for the participants.
Prof. Zhao Junfeng enjoys great prestige in the field of translation studies, now serving as the Director of Guangdong University Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences, and Center for Translation Studies. In view of new policies and requirements in a new situation, he conducted a through analysis of the importance, basic principle and application of thesis writing, stressing that sound competence in thesis writing is not only the basis of academic research, but also an important avenue for students to integrate theory and practice and effectively express their thoughts. Combining his own experience in teaching and research, Prof. Zhao shared some practical thesis writing techniques and methods, helping the participants grasp the essentials of thesis writing better.
With the case of students from Beijing Foreign Studies University, Graduate School of Translation & Interpretation Beijing Foreign Studies University Associate Prof. Zhao Tianyuan gave a detailed interpretation of the topic selection, writing and plan of MTI graduation thesis, providing methodology for teachers and students which can be fully implemented and and putting their ideas of thesis writing into shape. Referring to concrete and real cases, she helped MTI teachers and students have a better understanding of the actual situation of practice and internship, and encouraged students to promote their ability in academic research and career development.
The Academic Lecture Series of MTI education attracted teachers and students from colleges and universities in and outside the province, with nearly 100 attendees at each lecture. MTI students expressed that these lectures are simple and easy to understand, which effectively improved their knowledge and understanding of translation reports writing of MTI theses, inspired their passion for translation practice and pointed out the direction for future academic development. The successful hosting of a series of lectures further cultivated a favourable academic atmosphere in SFL and provided valuable learning and exchange opportunities for all the teachers and students.
