On June 1–2, the Jiangsu regional competition of the FLTRP “Star Teacher” Contest, co-organized by the School of Foreign Languages and the Center for Teaching and Faculty Development , was held at the Teaching Skills Training Center of our university.
The opening ceremony was attended by Chen Hong, Vice President of Jiangsu University; Guo Xinyu, Second-level Researcher of the Higher Education Division of Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education; Wang Haixiao, Chairman of the Jiangsu Association of Higher Education Research in Foreign Language Teaching; Li Xiaoxiang, Executive Vice President of the same association; Yin Bifeng, Director of the Teaching Affairs Office; and Wang Jianping, Director of the FLTRP East China Information Center. The event also welcomed 24 expert judges from various universities across Jiangsu Province and 33 teaching teams that advanced to the semifinals. The opening ceremony was presided by Dean Li Chongyue.
Vice President Chen Hong extended greetings to the leaders, experts, and team representatives and introduced the university and the school. She remarked that the FLTRP “Star Teacher” Contest is a significant event in the foreign language teaching community. This year’s competition embraces the rapid development of digital intelligence technologies, exploring innovative paths for integrating these technologies into foreign language teaching. She expressed hope that the competition would inspire new ideas, models, and outcomes to drive high-quality development in foreign language education. Chen also emphasized the university’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with peer institutions to develop high-quality foreign language courses and digital teaching materials.
Guo Xinyu, in her speech, highlighted that the contest aligns with the digitalization trends in foreign language education. By enhancing teachers’ digital competencies and guiding them in effectively utilizing digital resources and platforms, the competition aims to promote high-quality development in Jiangsu’s foreign language education. Li Xiaoxiang emphasized that the event focuses on empowering foreign language teaching through digital intelligence, encouraging educators to enhance their digital literacy and utilize cutting-edge technologies, including AI, to improve teaching and learning. Wang Jianping noted that the theme of the contest, Effective Use of Foreign Language Textbooks: Digital Intelligence Integration for Innovative Education, seeks to encourage teachers to enhance their digital skills and explore innovative solutions for leveraging textbooks and digital technologies, thus contributing to the modernization of education.
Following the opening ceremony, the 33 teaching teams were divided into two categories to compete in the semifinals, : College English and English for Specific Purposes. Teams were evaluated on their teaching design presentations, classroom teaching demonstrations, and responses to on-site questions. Based on comprehensive reviews, the judges selected 11 teams (the top 33%) to advance to the finals. On the morning of June 2, the finalists, no longer divided into categories, presented teaching designs, demonstrated lessons based on materials provided by the committee the previous day, and answered questions from the judges. After careful evaluation by the panel, the winners of the Grand Prize and First Prize were determined. The School of Foreign Languages’ College English and English for Specific Purposes teams both entered the finals, earning the Grand Prize (Third Place Overall) and the First Prize, respectively.
At noon on June 2, the two-day 2024 FLTRP “Star Teacher” Contest Jiangsu regional competition concluded successfully. Professor Wang Haixiao, Chairman of Jiangsu Collegiate Foreign Language Teaching and Research Association, provided feedback on the competition, and Professor Hu Yonghui, Secretary-General of the same association, hosted the award ceremony.
The FLTRP “Star Teacher” Contest is widely recognized in the field of foreign language education across Chinese universities and has been consistently included in the National Index of Teaching Development in Ordinary Universities published by the China Association of Higher Education. The competition has been held for 12 consecutive years and is classified as a top-tier (Category A) teaching competition at our university.
Against the backdrop of rapid advancements in big data, artificial intelligence, and other digital intelligence technologies, the School of Foreign Languages attaches great importance to the digital transformation of foreign language education and the enhancement of teaching competencies. The school prioritizes the development of teaching competition teams, encouraging educators to deeply integrate digital technologies into curriculum development, textbook creation, and teacher training. These efforts aim to promote the deep integration of modern information technologies with foreign language education.
