On the morning of December 18, in the packed Lecture Hall of Jiangsu University Meeting Center the loud applause was heard to bring down the house. The 14th Jiangsu University Postgraduate English Public Speaking Contest was held just here. Jiangsu University President Yan Xiaohong was present at the contest to deliver the opening speech. Leaders of the Graduate School, the School of Foreign Languages and the Overseas Education Colleges were invited to form the panel for the contest.
In his keynote speech, President Yan Xiaohong expounded the theme of the contest “Chinese Dream, My Dream”. He pointed in succession at the importance of English as a global language and the meaning of the theme of this contest. The sustainable development of China is the only path leading to the great dream of the rejuvenation of the Chinese people, said the President. The dream of students both in China and abroad is an integral part of the Chinese nation, and Jiangsu University provides the platform on which the enterprising youth may realize their dreams from both China and abroad, continued the President.
Postgraduates from all over the campus participated in the contest. Through the preliminary and the second rounds of competition, 15 contestants were entered for the final, including 9 master’s degree candidates, 3 doctor’s degree candidates and 3 international students from the Overseas Education College. At the contest, the contestants set forth their different understandings of the theme “Chinese Dream, My Dream”, either gracefully or enthusiastically. The audience were fascinated by the speeches delivered by the contestants, and they were engrossed in the stories told by the contestants about the convergence between the individual and the national dream. The contest comprises of a titled speech and Q & A link. The panelist Frankie prompted the speakers to answer thought-provoking questions raised on the contents of their speeches.
Through fierce competition, Yuan Yu from the School of Management and Aisha Alexis from the Overseas Education College respectively won a first prize, 4 other students won a second prize each and still 9 other students won a third prize each.
School of Foreign Languages the Postgraduate English Teaching Department Dean Chen Xin made professional remarks on the performance of the contestants, and voiced her opinions on how to promote their speaking skills. The contest concluded successfully in a prize awarding ceremony ringing with beautiful music.
