On the morning of June 6, Professor Ju Yumei, dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Qufu Normal University & a famous rhetorician in China visited the ILIAS at Jiangsu University. She gave a lecture during her visit titled “What is rhetoric discourse?”to faculties and students of the School. The speech was presided over by Professor Chen Hong, Chinese president of the ILIAS and dean of the School of Foreign Languages.
In her report, Professor Ju Yumei outlined the evolution of the concept of rhetoric through tracing it back to the philosophical origin of contemporary Western rhetoric. She also elaborated the nature and objective of rhetoric studies. In her introduction to the meaning of words, the relationship between knowledge and rhetoric and studies on the relationship between humans and words, Professor Ju revealed the philosophical thinking inherent in rhetoric studies, noted the contribution of linguistic turn to rhetoric, anatomized the relationship between rhetoric and argumentation and the important role played by rhetoric in social discourse, and recommended the approaches to rhetoric studies by resorting to her own research achievements in recent years.
After delivering the speech, Professor Ju Yumei visited the ILIAS housed by the School, where Secretary General Associate Professor Wu Peng gave a detailed introduction to the achievements that have been made by the ILIAS since its inception in JSU, as well as the origin and development of the ILIAS. Professor Ju sang a high praise for the international cooperation mechanism, the research orientation and the internationalized research achievements of the ILIAS.
