On the afternoon of May 25, a refreshing “English Poetry Gala” was held in R209 of Sanjiang Building. In fact, it is the end-of-term show of Selected Readings in English Poems, a university-level elective course taught by Wu Yuanyuan of the CET Departments. During the show hours, students of this elective course recited, intoned or sang the poems they have chosen to display the charm of classical English poetry and demonstrate their powerful talents of English recitation. Hua Houkun, dean of CET Department 2, Wu Peng, dean of CET Department 1, Ji Lijun, and Zhu Qing attended the show as judges for the students’ performance, who altogether granted 8 awards respectively called “Best Pronunciation”, “Greatest Charm”, “Best Partnership”, etc.
The university-level elective course of Selected Readings in English Poems is a bold attempt at and innovative experiment on PBL college English courses. As courses of the open teaching mode, PBL courses pursue the objective of completing fixed learning or research projects that require students to improve their capabilities of raising and solving problems, their adeptness in applying the knowledge they have learned, and their strict logical thinking by completing the specific tasks assigned by their teacher. A PBL course is apt to create a relaxed and initiative atmosphere for learning, in which the students are prompted to participate in their learning independently and actively and to exhibit their capabilities of all kinds to the fullest degree. As one of the PBL courses offered by the School of Foreign Languages, Selected Readings in English Poems fully interprets the notion of project-based learning. During this end-of-term show, students got a chance to perform the poems they have learned in a semester, when they recited or sang those classical English poems softly or sonorously, emotionally or enthusiastically, with the accompaniment of melodious music, thus creating a poetic atmosphere for the audience and judges to appreciate the rhythmical beauty of the English language.
In order to give a successful show, Ms. Wu Yuanyuan and her students had meticulously prepared everything together, ranging from making PPT, selecting the background music, scheduling the programs to designing the games. The show concluded successfully with a universal applause from the enthused audience and judges. In addition to this course, Public English Speaking and Introduction to Critical Thinking respectively taught by Ji Lijun and Wu Peng are also ranked among the experimented PBL courses of Jiangsu University, both of which had been finished earlier with good teaching results.
