On the morning of May 17, Ms. Li Xia of CET Department I gave a demonstration lecture in Z503. Party Committee Secretary Lu Yunsong, Deputy Dean Li Chongyue and over 20 faculties of the School of Foreign Languages observed the lecture.
Taking 6 episodes of the film “Thank you for smoking”, in her lecture Ms. Li introduced the 6 common fallacies to her students: false analogy, appeal to authority, appeal to populace, appeal to pity, personal abuse and dilemma. She explored the cultivation of critical thinking capability in reading and writing through recognizing, analyzing and assessing fallacies.
Aimed at exploring the useful strategies for cultivating students’ critical thinking capability in College English Teaching, Ms. Li adopted the discussion and interactive teaching model to encourage her students to think critically, question boldly and doubt audaciously. The lecturer encouraged her students to conscientiously analyze and thoroughly examine the questions inherent in the cases she had introduced in the very beginning, raising their thinking to a higher level and promoting the integration of critical thinking cultivation into classroom English instruction. She animated her lecture to arouse the students’ interest, which won the universal acclaim of both students and visitors of the lesson. The demonstration lecture concluded successfully.
