The Department of European Languages was established in October 2018 and currently has seven teachers, including three teachers of German, three teachers of Russian and one teacher of Spanish. Of these teachers, three are associate professors, two are doctoral degree holders, and all have studied abroad, with four having foreign degrees.
The department teaches first and second foreign languages to undergraduate and postgraduate students. The first foreign language courses include those of German and Russian, and the second foreign language courses include those of German, Russian and Spanish. The department also teaches series courses to Cross-culture Micro-Majors: Russian for Beginners, Basic Russian, Advanced Russian, Audio-Visual Russian, The Survey of Russia, Business Oral and Written Russian. Besides these, it offers the following optional courses: Elementary German, Spanish, Russian, Museums and Galleries in Europe, German Society and Culture, Introduction to German cultural history, Practical German Conversation (for beginners), Appreciation of Russian classic literature, Russian for beginners, Russian culture, 12 Lectures on Conditions of Russia, Overview of European Studies, A Comparative Study of German, Russian and Spanish Cultures, Culture of the Spanish World.
With the school motto of “Erudition, Truth, Virtue” and the spirit of “Self-improvement and Virtue, Practical Work and Truth” in heart, these teachers never forget their original aspiration and mission. Aiming at development goals of UJS and SFL, they are determined to brave all difficulties in perfecting their teaching skills and raising their teaching quality so as to build an outstanding teaching group and a number of golden courses.
Centre for Chinese and German Language and Culture at Jiangsu University
In December 2012, Jiangsu University signed a cooperation agreement with the University of Karl-Franz in Graz, Austria to establish the Centre for Chinese and German Language and Culture at Jiangsu University, which was founded in April 2013. The aim of the Centre is to promote and enhance the exchange and cooperation between Jiangsu University and the University of Karl-Franz in Graz in the field of languages and cultures. In other words, the Centre teaches German and organize cultural activities to meet the needs of Jiangsu University for training professionals with a German language background with an international perspective of cooperation, excellent teachers and a modern teaching environment.
In line with the reality of the two Chinese and Austrian universities, the Centre carries out the following activities:
1. Offering German language and cultural courses.
2. Organizing training in German language and culture (German teacher training, pre-test training for the German Language Test DAF).
3. Providing consultation service on Austrian education, culture etc.
4. Acting as a base for language and cultural practice abroad for Chinese language students at the University of Graz and carrying out language and cultural exchange activities.
5. Providing Chinese teachers for the University of Karl-Franz in Graz.
6. Organizing short-term language and cultural programs.
