Against the backdrop of the accelerating construction of a “Double First-class University” project in JSU, in June 2017 the School of Foreign Languages set up the Center for International Language Courses (CILC) to meet the ever increasing demand of JSU students for high-end international language courses. And in 2019, faculties of CILC formed the Third Department of College English Teaching, which was renamed as the Department of College English Teaching for Advanced Level students in 2022. The core objectives of the department are to conscientiously develop the languages courses that very well tally with the international language teaching and testing and in the meanwhile to cultivate a foreign language faculty qualified by the authoritative international testing organizations.
Currently the department mainly develop, offer and administer the following five categories of courses: (1) academic English courses (EGAP, EGSP) aimed at cultivating the critical academic discussion ability, offered mainly to JSU students of a honors class and those who have already passed the CET-6; (2) advanced language courses aimed at helping students pass an international language tests (such as IELTS, TOEFL, BEC, and Cambridge English Certificate), offered mainly to students of international classes or talent classes, and all other students and faculties on campus interested in these courses; (3) courses aimed at helping teachers on campus scheduled to study abroad to pass the foreign language qualification test (such as PETS-5); (4) advanced tailored courses aimed at promoting a certain English skill (listening, speaking, reading, writing or translation), mainly offered to students and faculties interested in them on campus; (5) advanced tailored courses aimed at promoting the language communication, argumentative communication and critical thinking skills in workplace, offered mainly to students and staffs interested in them on and off campus. In addition, the department are in charge of arranging for students to take foreign language contests of all levels on and off campus.
All 15 faculties of the department have plentiful teaching experiences and a high teaching level, most of whom have won awards at foreign language teaching contests in China. Some outstanding teachers are heading research projects at the national and the provincial and ministerial level and have enjoyed great prestige in and out of Jiangsu province. In future, the department will actively participate in the construction of Jiangsu University into a “Double First-class” international university, highlight the conscientious cultivation of the language, thinking and intercultural communication abilities of all students and faculties, and make efforts to help all disciplines of the University to cultivate international talents with an authentic international vision and a high level of foreign language competency.
