At 3:00 p.m. on June 2, 2022, Xi’an International Studies University School of Japanese Culture and Economy Professor Wu Yuxin delivers an online lecture to Department of Japanese faculty and students entitled “Honorifics: formulaic vs. strategic”. The lecture was presided over by Associate Professor Lu Xueying. More than 290 teachers and students from the Japanese Department of Jiangsu University as well as from other universities listened to the lecture. SFL Professor Li Chongyue personally attended the lecture.
To begin with, Professor Wu pointed out that politeness is the golden key to human coexistence, honorific is the core of polite language, and honorific is in fact a universal phenomenon in human languages, including Chinese and English. Then by citing examples from Japanese and Chinese, he explained in detail the tug of war between the formulaic and strategic use of honorific expressions in their evolution, analyzing the features of polite expressions in the Internet age. During the QA session, Professor Wu answered the questions raised by the enthused teachers and students. They learned a lot from Professor Wu’s interesting and enlightening lecture.
Professor Wu Yuxin, a PhD in literature and PhD supervisor, is Dean of the School of Japanese Culture and Economy. He is also Vice President of the China Association for Japanese Language Teaching and Research, Vice President of the Chinese-Japanese Comparative Study Association, President of the Northwest Branch of the China Association for Japanese Language Teaching and Research, Member and Secretary General of the Foreign Language and Literature Working Committee under the Shaanxi Provincial Teaching Steering Committee. He is the holder of the title of Famous Faculty Members of Colleges and Universities in Shaanxi Province. His main research fields include Japanese Linguistics and Japanese Teaching Methodology. He has published 3 monographs and more than 50 papers on honorific expressions, appropriate expressions and politeness phenomena in academic journals both at home and abroad. He has headed 2 projects sponsored by the National Social Sciences Fund, and headed or or participated in 9 projects of the provincial/ ministerial level or above. He also won a number of prizes for his academic achievements.
