On the afternoon of May 29, “1st German Poetry Reading Competition of Jiangsu University” was grandly held in F1 Auditorium of Jiangsu University Library. Vice President of Jiangsu University Zhao Yutao delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. Nearly 120 students were present at the competition, together with School of Foreign Languages Party Committee Secretary Lu Yunsong, Dean Li Chongyue, Deputy Dean Wang Ying, Director Feng Yun of the General Affairs Office of the International Office, Teaching Superintendent Xu Kangmei, Dean of European Languages Department Yang Jing, German teacher Svenja Sabrina Tänzer and some faculty members of the School of Foreign Languages.
The competition was undertaken by Jiangsu University Sino-German Language and Culture Center. Since the beginning of April, two stages of competition, that is preliminary (online) and final (offline), have been organized and 15 students from different schools on campus have entered the final. The competitors each gave a new interpretation of their reading in an authentic intonation and perfect pronunciation, with great enthusiasm, appropriate music and elegant PPT. The wonderful performance was warmly applauded by the audience. The poets the 15 contestants have chosen include Goethe, Schiller, Heine and Hesse. Russian student named Jana from the Overseas Education College, Spanish teacher Wang Yuecheng from the School of Foreign Languages, and German friend Svenja Sabrina Tänzer made their guest appearance on the stage. They joined hands to bring presented a unique show to the audience.
To ensure the fairness, justice and openness of the competition, the contestants had drawn their lots for the competition order in advance. The competition finally awarded a first award to Su Xinxiu from Pharmaceutical Engineering Class 1701 of the School of Pharmacy and Huang Xiaohan from English Class 1603 of the School of Foreign Languages, a second award to Zheng Qiumin from English Class 1601 of Jingjiang College, Hua Zhenghao from Linguistics and Applied Linguistics Postgraduate Grade 18 of the School of Foreign languages, Chen Huiping from English Class 1603 of the School of Foreign Languages, and Xia Zhengfang from English Class 1602 of Jingjiang College. The online ballot was conducted one week ahead of the competition on the official account “Jiangsu University Sino-German Language and Culture Center”. Zheng Qiumin from English Class 1601 of Jingjiang College won the “People’s Choice Award” of the competition.
School of Foreign Languages Dean Li Chongyue delivered the concluding speech. The competition has enhanced the comprehensive quality of students, promoted their practical ability of German, created an atmosphere for German learning on campus and gave an impetus to the German classroom instruction.
