August 17-19, SFL Professor Wang Xuemei attended the “Symposium on Contemporary Literary Studies from the Perspective of a Community of Shared Future for Mankind” sponsored by the board of directors of Contemporary Foreign Literature and hosted by the School of Foreign Languages, Jinggangshan University. She presented her paper titled “Why do we read Tang poetry?”, sharing American professor Frederick Turner’s understanding of the Chinese cultural spirit in his translation of Tang poetry and his thought on a community of shared future for mankind embodied in concepts of space, ecosystem, music, and salvation expounded in the Tang poetry.
The meeting held in Ji’an, Jiangxi nearby the Jinggan Mountains honored as the cradle of the Chinese revolution welcomed more than 110 specialists and scholars from colleges and universities including Nanjing University, Shanghai International Studies University, and Central China Normal University. The participants together raced the origin and development of the community of shared future for mankind, explored the relationship between the said concept and the contemporary foreign literature, decided to highlight more Chinese elements in foreign literary studies, and promote the construction of the community of a shared future for mankind initiated by CPC Secretary General Xi Jinping and established by the 19th CPC Congress so as to constantly promote the right of speech in the international academic circles of the Chinese scholars by approaching the world from the stance of China.
The spirit of this meeting will be of guiding significance to the development of “Foreign Literature Program” of Jiangsu University. (School of Foreign Languages)
