On the morning of June 25, the Handwriting & Drawing Room in the Main Building welcomed its first group of users. Class 1701 of English Education majors started their training on basic skills right here. The students were deeply impressed by the band-new desks and chairs, multimedia devices and unused small blackboards in the room.
The practice for English Education majors this semester comprise training on basic skills for teachers and training on the basic skills of the English language. The former training mainly consists in learning to draw stick figures, which will be of great use to the students’ future teaching in kindergartens and primary and secondary schools. The blackboard drawing may on the one hand attract the students’ attention, and on the other hand deepen their understanding of the inculcated knowledge. The combination of these simple drawings with the teaching language makes the learning contents simpler and more picturesque. A teacher at the School of Art was invited to teach the drawing to students majoring in English Education. By adopting the various means of lecturing, individual coaching, observing the model works and so on, the students quickly learned the basic knowledge in simple drawing, mastered the structure of an object and the law, proportion and main features of perspective, and got prepared for the future teaching in this respect.
The training on the basic skills of the English language is mainly directed at English handwriting, respectively by pen and chalk. The handwriting is one of the fundamental skills required of a teacher. Tidy and beautiful handwriting on the blackboard will both form an integral part of the teaching process and serve as one of the most important factors to enhance the teaching quality. The Department of English Education has included the basic skill training in its curriculum and taken strict measures to administer the training so that the students will actually receive good training on teaching skills required of them for their future work and the realization of their educational objective.
