On 14th and 16th October, Dr.Hou Lusha from English Department of the School of Foreign Languages held two unique open classes in class rooms 215 and 208 of Sanshan Building respectively, in which she used the unit of ‘The Truth of Lies’ in Comprehensive English A(III) as the content of the public lectures. In the introductory section, Dr. Hou introduced the unit theme with two short videos-“Folk Songs about White Lies” and “The Negative Effects of White Lies” -to attract students' attention and stimulate their curiosity about lies and the truth behind them.
Then, Dr. Hou moved to the classroom interactive activities. She guided students to interpret and evaluate by introducing proverbs related to lies, creating an atmosphere of thinking and debate in the classroom. Next, students were invited to answer questions related to short videos and encouraged to provide examples of white lies in their daily lives. These classroom interactions motivate students to think deeply about the truth and implications of lies.
After the classroom discussion, Dr. Hou led the students to interpret the structure of the article in detail, analyzing the main idea and central idea paragraph by paragraph. In the detailed teaching process, she guided students to deeply consider the impact of lies on social stability, interpersonal relationships, and personal moral qualities through teaching activities such as background introduction, paragraph theme analysis, explanation of key words and phrases, and translation and application.
In addition, she emphasized that teaching design should integrate language points, take social responsibility as a starting point, and incorporate ideological and political education into the curriculum.While improving English knowledge and skills, enhance students' sense of social responsibility, moral standards, and personal character. Hou's open class teaching design and classroom performance reflect her excellent teaching skills and ability to master the teaching of English major basic courses, and students have responded well.
School of Foreign Languages provides a three-year training program for young PhDs introduced in accordance with the school's requirements, helping young teachers gradually adapt to classroom teaching and continuously improve and innovate teaching designs; encouraging young teachers to actively participate in various teaching competitions, laying a solid foundation for professional development.
