Recently, feedback from the National Foreign Language Teaching and Testing Office revealed outstanding achievements by the 2020 students of English majors at the School of Foreign Languages in the 2024 National Test for English Majors Band 8 (TEM-8), setting a new historical record.
On April 13, a total of 167 students from three English major programs—English Program, English (Education) Program, and the English (Sino-US Credit Transfer) Program—sat for the exam. The first-time pass rate reached nearly 90%, surpassing the national average by 48.83 percentage points. Among them, the excellence rate for the English program was 26.56%, while the English (Education) program achieved 17.58%. The combined excellence and pass rates for both programs exceeded 60%, marking a historic high.
TEM-8, launched in 1990 under the guidance of the National Administrative Committee on Teaching English Language to Majors in Higher Education under the Ministry of Education, serves as an internal teaching assessment for senior undergraduates majoring in English. It has become a significant indicator of the quality of undergraduate English education at Chinese universities. This examination focuses on assessing the comprehensive foreign language skills of senior undergraduate English majors, including listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. Its results are widely recognized as a key benchmark for evaluating the abilities of English graduates.
Leveraging its designation as a National First-Class Undergraduate Program, the School of Foreign Languages is committed to cultivating high-caliber language professionals with a global perspective, solid linguistic competence, and strong communication and mediation skills in international affairs. The remarkable TEM-8 results are a testament to the quality of talent cultivation and the effectiveness of English language teaching at the school. Moving forward, the School will continue to take the construction of National First-Class Undergraduate Programs as its foundation, adhere to sound principles, innovate continuously, and enhance the quality of English major education to nurture top-tier talent.
