November 18-19, the first “Symposium on Corpus Linguistics and Discourse Analysis” was held at Zhuhai campus of Sun Yat-sen University. Dean Assistant of the School of Foreign Languages &Chinese Secretary General of the ILIAS Wu Peng attended the meeting and delivered the keynote speech titled “A pragma-dialectical approach to news commentary--a case of a China Daily editorial on anti-trust survey”.
In his speech, Wu Peng highlighted the pragma-dialectical approach to news commentary as significant social discourse practice. At first, he noted the praga-dialectical attribute and features of news commentary. Then he deliberated on the possibility of analyzing and evaluating the news commentary discourse from the perspective of pragma-dialectics. Last but not least, he testified to the plausibility and interpretability of the praga-dialectical approach to new commentary discourse with a case of an important China Daily editorial on antitrust survey. Wu’s speech was thought highly of by all scholars and specialists present at the meeting.
The Symposium was hosted and organized by the School of International Studies, Sun Yat-sen University. It is aimed at further clarifying the complementarity between discourse analysis and a corpus-based study, aligning and converging the two approaches, and providing methodological support for large-scale discourse analysis. More than 10 celebrated specialists in the field of discourse analysis, including Professor He Wei at Beijing Foreign Studies University, Professor Yang Bingjun at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Professor Xu Jun at University of International Business and Economics, and Professor Pang Jixian at Zhejiang University, attended the meeting and delivered important speeches at it.
