June 9, Associate Professor Peng Xi at the Japanese Department, Nanjing University, secretary general of Jiangsu Branch of China Japanese Education Association gave an academic lecture titled “Evolution and features of the Japanese culture” to the faculty and students of the Japanese Department. Professor Su Jianhong, a deputy dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Jiangsu University presided over the lecture attended by more than 150 faculty and students of the Japanese Department.
Before the lecture, Associate Professor Peng Xi held talks with Dr. Liu Shoujun, a deputy dean of the Japanese Department as well as some key faculties of the Japanese Department. During the talks, Associate Professor Peng Xi elaborated on the undergraduate cultivation, discipline construction, second classroom activities, etc. of the Japanese Program of Nanjing University. The visitor also exchanged ideas with the meeting participants on the cultivation of interdisciplinary talents under the guidance of the New National Standards for Japanese Education.
In the academic lecture in the afternoon, Associate Professor Peng Xi headed the faculty and students on a “time-travel” through his detailed narration oriented at the two vectors of the Sino-Japanese relations. The lecturer started with the origin of the Japanese nation, outlined the Sino-Japanese relations from ancient to modern times, sketched the features of Sino-Japanese cultural exchanges, and noted the omnipresence of Chinese elements in the Japanese culture and analyzed the backdrop for the formation of the Japanese uniqueness. In addition, Associate Professor Peng Xi analyzed the evolution of features of the Japanese culture from the perspectives of the opening of the the Japanese under the influence of the Western civilization and the disparity between the Chinese and the Japanese culture. Peng’s lecture deepened the understanding of the faculty and students of the Japanese culture and gave much revelation to the comparative study on the Chinese and the Japanese culture of the audience. During the QA time, Associate Professor Peng Xi answered the questions raised by the students such as the use of kanji in the Japanese language and the symbolic meaning of the Mikado system.
Associate Professor Peng Xi, Ph.D, graduated from the University of Foreign Studies at Tokyo, Japan, is currently secretary general of Jiangsu Branch of China Japanese Education Association, an associate professor of the Japanese Department, the School of Foreign Languages, Nanjing University, and his research orientation is Japanese culture. In recent years, he has been devoted to translating modern and contemporary Japanese philosophical thoughts into Chinese and his main translated works include Collected Works of Kuki Shuzo, Time and Space in the Japanese Culture by Shuichi Kato, Germany Ideology in the Context of Textology by Hiromatsu Wataru. His representative papers include Japanese features of ““Japanese Marxism”--a case study of Hiromatsu Wataru’s and Yamanouchi Yasushi’s interpretations” (Japanese Studies, March 2012) and “On the conception of the Japanese culture by Shuichi Kato” (Journal of Zhengzhou University, philosophy and social science edition, November 2016).
