The School of Foreign Languages offers 3 undergraduate programs, that is the English Program, the English (Education) Program, the Japanese Program, and 1 MA Program of the second-level discipline of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. The School houses 7 teaching departments: the English Department, the English Education Department, the Japanese Department, College English Teaching Department I, College English Teaching Department II, Postgraduate English Teaching Department and Minor Language Teaching and Research Section. Moreover, the School houses the Language Learning Center, the Center for International Language Courses, and the Clinic for Foreign Language Learning. Last but not least, the School houses the Sino-German Language and Culture Center of Jiangsu University.
The School boasts highly qualified and internationally renowned faculty members. Now we have 163 faculty and staff members, including 145 full-time teachers, comprising 8 professors, 48 associate professors, 24 PhDs, and 115 master’s degree holders. 2 of our full-time faculties are candidates for the Youth Academic Pacesetters of Jiangsu University. In the previous year, 8 of our faculties were sent to work for a PhD (4 in places other than China’s mainland), 6 to study overseas in a top university as a visiting scholar, and 5 to work in the Institute of Confucius established in a foreign state. The School perennially hires more than 30 foreign experts, who speak English, Japanese, Italian, etc. The School owns excellent teaching facilities and equipment and plentiful internet resources. Currently the School has more than 20 multi-functional language labs, 1 autonomous learning center, 2 standardized IELTS & TOEFL examination rooms, and 1 School library.
The School now houses 1 international research institute, namely the International Learned Institute of Argumentation Studies (the Netherlands); 3 University-level research institutes, namely the Corpus-based Translation Studies Center of Jiangsu University, the Center for Pearl S. Buck Studies of Jiangsu University, the Institute of Argumentation of Jiangsu University; 8 School-level research institutes, namely the Institute of Applied Linguistics, the Institute of English Literature, the Center for Translation Studies, the Institute of Foreign Language Education and Instruction, the Institute of Pragmatic Theory and Application, the Center for Studies on Intercultural Communication, the Institute of Japan Studies, and the Center for Studies on Modern Japan.
The School advocates fortifying its academic research on the basis of quality teaching. Through strict teaching administration, the School has made good teaching performance. A number of our faculties have won a “grand prize” and a “first prize” at the National College English Teaching Competition. Students taught by faculties of the School have been at the forefront of China’s colleges and institutions of the same category in the TEM-4, the TEM-8, the CET-4, the CET-6 over the years. Our graduates are commonly commended by their employers for their solid academic foundation, strong capability of language practice, all-round professional quality and conscientious work. We have made remarkable achievements in postgraduate English teaching reform, winning 2 provincial-level awards for educational achievements and 1 state-level award for postgraduate teaching achievements. The School keeps abreast with the international frontier researches by maintaining its vantages and features. The School faculty members have undertaken 15 state-level research projects and 28 provincial-level research projects. The yearly government-granted research funding per faculty adds up to RMB 19,900. The School has sponsored or undertaken 5 national and international symposiums. Faculties of the School have published 37 research papers indexed by the SSCI, A&HCI, EI or CSSCI (foreign language periodicals). The School faculties have won 6 provincial or ministerial-level awards for teaching achievements. Besides highlighting and maintaining our vantages and features in the fields of discourse analysis, esp. academic discourse analysis, empirical studies on second language acquisition, corpus-based translation studies, and studies on feminist literature, the School has exerted its influence in China and enjoyed some prestige internationally on pragma-dialectical studies. We have successfully attracted the International Learned Institute of Argumentation Studies, an authoritative research institution in the field of argumentation, to wholly settle at the School. In 2107 the ILIAS edited 2 issues of an international periodical and got a compiled book of collected papers by international researchers published by John Benjamins of the Netherlands. A breakthrough has been made in studies on the translation of Chinese classics and their international publicity, marked by the granting of 1 key project sponsored by the National Social Science Fund in 2017.
