Overview
The Center for Cultural Discourse Studies (CCDS) at the School of Foreign Languages, Jiangsu University, founded in March 2011, is a multi-functional research center devoted to academic innovation, postgraduate education, social services, etc. The CCDS fixes it objective at conglomerating the high-quality academic resources in and out of the University, both at home and abroad, to form a team of discourse researchers who will provide social services based on what they have learned and studied, and in the meanwhile to cultivate a team of young researchers who will take the lead in both teaching and academic studies.
Currently, the CCDS consists of 16 researchers, including 8 teachers in and out of Jiangsu University, 4 appointed researchers, and 4 MA candidates majoring in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics at the School of Foreign Languages. All these researchers are divided into 4 standing research groups, namely, business discourse research group, political discourse research group, media discourse research group and academic discourse research group. 1 member of the CCDS is Appointed Specialist of Zhenjiang Center for Studies on Social Sciences and 1 member Candidate for Youth Academic Leader of Jiangsu University. The CCDS has established good relations in academic cooperation with such famous discourse research and teaching institutions as the Department of Verbal Communication, rgumentation Theory and Rhetoric at the University of Amsterdam, Leiden University Center for Languages (LUCL), Center for Chinese Contemporary Discourse Studies in Zhejiang University, Center for the Study of Language and Cognition at Zhejiang University, Center for Functional Linguistics at Sun Yat-sen University, Center for Culture and Discourse Studies at Hangzhou Normal University, etc.

Research Hypothesis of the Center
Discourse Studies have outgrown the sheer grammatical analysis into a frontier multi-disciplinary research field in humanities and social sciences, enjoying three kernel features, namely awareness of social problems, multi-disciplinary and micro- and macro- systematic linguistic analysis at the contemporary state. In view of this, besides paying attention to the academic significance of discourse analysis, Chinese discourse researchers should make efforts in the following three aspects: (1) taking social problems, especially the most urgent ones as research tasks and value orientations in order to offer solutions or partial solutions to them and conscientiously examine all reforms and development in contemporary China with the awareness of significant issues and the perfect unity between the academic significance and the social responsibility of discourse researchers; (2) constructing a discourse theory and discourse strategies rooted in Chinese culture and conforming to the Chinese social-historical context by both emulating the foreign discourse theories and excavating the cultural discourse conception of ancient Chinese scholars; (3) carrying out discourse studies from different levels and perspectives by strengthening the cooperation between different disciplines and sharing the varied ideas of different scholars.
